Resources for Learning Plants & Ecology
This blog is a growing collection of practical resources for learning about plants, ecology, and the natural world. Here you’ll find plant identification guides, recommended field guides, foraging resources, favorite reads, outdoor skills, and educational tools for exploring landscapes across North America.
My background is in forest ecology and botany, and for more than a decade, I’ve worked as an educator teaching people how to recognize plants and understand ecosystems. I’ve lived in all four corners of the United States, so I know what it’s like to arrive somewhere new and start learning the ecology of a place from the ground up.
Most of my work has been in backcountry settings, conducting research, guiding, or recreating outdoors. In the Southwest, I worked for the National Park Service, forest ecology labs at Northern Arizona University, and in native plant greenhouses before moving to the PNW. During my years running a wilderness school in Mount Vernon, Washington, I led foraging apprenticeships, plant walks, and ethnobotany workshops throughout the region. Many of the guides and resources shared here are from my direct experiences working with plants and experiencing the land.
Think of this space as a library where you can find practical tools for identifying plants, building community, learning ecology, and developing outdoor skills.
If you’re looking for longer reflections, essays, and deeper field notes, you can find those on my Substack.
